I reviewed Storm Breaker by Nisha J. Tuli only a few short months ago, so I was pretty surprised when I discovered Book 2 in the series was going to be published soon. Of course I had to read it. And, man, what a ride!
Poet and Rook are in the Wastes and headed toward Rook’s home, where Poet learns and sees for herself how everything she’s been told about Solitudes was a lie meant to protect those in high society. She’s still wrapping her mind around this when General Sol arrives. Apparently, she’s been in frequent communication with Rook’s father, and she has a mission for Rook and Poet. Return to New Manhattan and help find the cure for Keepers, and she’ll teach them her ways of controlling Spark when it hits them, which is exactly how she’s kept New Manhattan powered for all these years.
Poet and Rook both show growth from Storm Breaker and continue to grow as characters throughout this installment. They’re young and a bit impulsive, and their occasional teenage dramatics could be a little much for me. Still, they remained highly relatable, and I loved watching their relationship begin to blossom. Of course, more secrets and surprises muscle their way in to make an already difficult mission even harder and push them apart again. When will they find some peace? I also love all the descriptions of the different storms: the weather is a character in its own right.

Tuli’s prose remains straightforward and accessible. It’s a dialogue-heavy story told in present-tense, first-person narration by Poet herself. It’s romance-forward with a few swoonworthy moments, but nothing explicit. Mounting tension drives a tale that remains fast-paced throughout.
I. Cannot. Wait. for what comes next. Storm Caller leaves the reader hanging off a cliff. I hope my grip lasts until the third book is published!
This is a great fit for readers who enjoy dystopian fantasy and, of course, for readers of the romantasy genre.
