If reading were an Olympic sport, some countries would absolutely dominate the podium depending on the genre. So for today’s Nerd Out, I’m awarding totally unofficial, completely bookish medals to countries that feel like genre powerhouses.
Ready? Let the Reading Olympics begin.
🥇 Literary Fiction
Gold: France
French literature has a long tradition of philosophical, character-driven, and stylistically bold fiction. If there were a gold medal for introspective prose and existential musings, France would be standing on the top step.
Silver: Japan
Japanese literary fiction is known for its quiet emotional depth, atmosphere, and subtle character work. Think reflective, thoughtful, and beautifully restrained storytelling.
Bronze: Germany
Germany brings weighty themes, historical reflection, and serious literary craft. Not always light reading, but definitely medal-worthy.
🥇 Mystery & Thriller
Gold: Sweden
Nordic noir alone earns Sweden a spot on the podium. Dark, moody, socially aware crime fiction is basically a national export at this point.
Silver: United Kingdom
From classic whodunits to modern psychological thrillers, the UK has been solving fictional murders for generations.
Bronze: United States
Fast-paced thrillers, legal dramas, serial killers, you name it. The U.S. definitely earns a spot for sheer variety and volume.
🥇 Fantasy
Gold: United Kingdom
Epic fantasy, magical schools, sprawling worlds, the UK has produced some of the most beloved fantasy of all time.
Silver: United States
From high fantasy to urban fantasy, American authors have built countless worlds readers love to escape into.
Bronze: Poland
Dark, folklore-infused fantasy has a strong home here, with morally gray heroes and rich mythological roots.
🥇 Romantasy
Gold: United States
Big feelings, big stakes, and big fandoms. The U.S. has fully embraced romance plus magic in a major way.
Silver: Canada
Canadian authors have been quietly delivering emotionally layered fantasy romances that deserve more spotlight.
Bronze: Australia
Strong heroines, rich worlds, and swoony tension make Australia a solid contender in the romantasy arena.
🥇 Romance
Gold: United States
Romance is one of the biggest genres in the U.S., with everything from small-town love stories to high-heat contemporary and historical epics.
Silver: Brazil
Romantic storytelling has a huge and passionate readership here, especially in contemporary and emotional love stories.
Bronze: Philippines
A strong culture of serialized romance and deeply emotional storytelling earns a well-deserved place on the podium.
🥇 Science Fiction
Gold: United States
From space operas to dystopias to tech-driven futures, the U.S. has long been a powerhouse in sci-fi.
Silver: China
Chinese science fiction has gained major global attention in recent years, blending big ideas with unique cultural perspectives.
Bronze: Russia
Philosophical, speculative, and often deeply human, Russian sci-fi has a rich legacy.
🥇 Horror
Gold: United States
From haunted houses to cosmic dread, the U.S. has produced some of the most widely read horror in the world.
Silver: Japan
Psychological horror, unsettling atmosphere, and lingering dread are hallmarks here.
Bronze: Mexico
Folklore, ghosts, and cultural horror traditions give Mexico a strong and distinctive voice in the genre.
Of course, these medals are all in good fun, every country has incredible stories to tell. But it’s fun to imagine a world where books get podium ceremonies and authors wave flags.
