Review: Fabric of Lies by Susan Van Kirk

Genre: Fiction, Mystery

When the now-adult child of a vanished couple returns looking for the truth, old suspicions flare and a decades-old disappearance refuses to stay buried.

I knew that Fabric of Lies by Susan Van Kirk would be a charming read from the very first sentence, and it delivered. We begin in the kitchen with Grace and her husband Jeff sharing a quick dance before their day begins, and then the story wastes no time getting to the heart of things. The now thirty-something son of a couple who vanished when he was two has returned to town, determined to uncover what happened to them.

Although this is the sixth book in the Endurance mystery series and I’ve read none of the earlier ones, I never once felt lost. Van Kirk writes in a clean, no-frills way that’s easy to follow, and the story stays engaging thanks to her strong visual sequencing. The pacing is true to a traditional cozy mystery, steady and deliberate, with tension built through observation rather than shock value.

I thought the mystery itself was excellent, and I definitely felt invested in the secondary storyline about the newspaper. I liked most of the characters, but especially Grace’s sister-in-law, Lettie. What a feisty hoot! I would have liked to get to know the cast even better, though; I’m naturally drawn to characters who are gritty and flawed. These characters all come across as charming and nice, and while I’m sure they each have their own mix of strengths and weaknesses, I often felt I was being shown mostly one or the other depending on who the character was. That’s perhaps one benefit of having read the earlier installments in the series.

I was impressed that I hadn’t figured out who was behind the disappearance. I applaud the author for keeping this under wraps until just the right moment. I enjoyed the time I spent with Fabric of Lies, and I think fans of cozy mysteries especially will appreciate this story. Set in a charming town with a cast of characters who largely feel like family, it has that comfort-read quality. Readers who enjoy Hallmark movies might also find this one appealing.

Nerd Rating: 🤓🤓🤓 – A cozy mystery that delivers exactly what it promises and saves its twist for just the right moment.
