Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire! At least that’s what the three narrators expect in 59 Minutes by Holly Seddon after a mobile alert warns the public that a nuclear missile will strike the south of England at 6 p.m. What follows is exactly what you’d imagine: fear, chaos, and a desperate scramble for meaning when time suddenly has an expiration date.
This book grabs you right out of the gate. The brief informational intro is all it takes to set the stage and crank up the tension. The premise is both intriguing and terrifying, the kind that could easily keep someone reading straight through, and maybe even cause a few nightmares after. That’s the mark of a story well told, and Ms. Seddon delivers.
Each of the main characters feels distinct, believable, and relatable. You’ll genuinely want to know what happens to them, whether they live or die, and what life will be like afterward. You’ll keep reading because you care, and by the end of the first chapter, you’ll already be invested. I personally would have liked to see one male narrator, or at least someone whose focus wasn’t solely on reuniting with loved ones. Most people probably would make that their goal, but what about a widow whose children live abroad, or a teenager in the foster system with no real home to run to? It’s a small nitpick, but I’d have loved to see those angles explored. Still, the story unfolds exactly as it needs to for the message it’s telling.
The story takes off at a sprint and keeps that strong momentum until about two-thirds of the way through. It slows down unexpectedly at that point. I think it would have benefited from holding that intensity a little longer and tightening the wrap-up.
Overall, I really enjoyed the time I spent with this story, and I think most readers will. The premise alone makes it worth picking up and sparks that inevitable question of what we’d each do with our own 59 minutes. I recommend it to readers of suspense and dystopian fiction, as well as those who enjoy strong female narrators and stories that challenge how we might act under impossible pressure.
