A luminous, multi-voiced journey through love, loss, and the unexpected beauty of broken things.
Oh my word. I was not expecting that. I just closed the cover on The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan, and I am still reeling.
Late in the book, a character reflects: “Broken things are beautiful. More beautiful in the end than perfect things, which are usually an illusion of some sort.” That line sums up the story perfectly. What begins with childhood dreams spirals through tragedy and running, only to come full circle with a shocking discovery. This is a story of love, grief, self-discovery, and redemption.
The heart and soul of the novel are its characters. They are authentic, nuanced, flawed, and beautiful, and they all grow and evolve as the story unfolds. The large cast can make for a disorienting start, and I admit I was confused the first time a new narrator appeared. Essentially, we are reading what becomes Cate Kay’s memoir, with first-person entries from everyone who knew her, as well as Cate herself. The inclusion of footnotes in some chapters added an extra layer, though in longer sections they could feel more distracting than illuminating. I occasionally had to flip back to recall what the footnote referred to.
These small hurdles aside, this book left a mark. The characters are vibrant and their interconnected stories pull the reader in until the last page.
I highly recommend this to readers who love character-driven stories, layered narratives, and novels that ask you to sit with both the beauty and the brokenness of life.
Nerd Rating: 🤓🤓🤓🤓 – A rich, emotionally resonant novel that proves broken things can be the most beautiful of all.
Let’s discuss: Do you enjoy novels told through multiple first-person voices and unconventional formats like footnotes?
